Neighborhood Information
The Old North is the name of an area in Tel Aviv that was built during the 1930s and 1940s north of the city’s historic core. The area was called the northern part of the city, and the term “Old North” was different from the “New North” area built after the establishment of the state. The original area is defined as the area between Hayarkon River in the north and Ben Zion Boulevard and Bograshov Street in the south, and from Ibn Gvirol Street in the east to the Mediterranean Sea in the west. The administrative division of the municipality defines the “Old North Quarter” only as part of the north of Ben-Gurion Boulevard and the section south of it as the “Central Tel Aviv District.”
The Old North is unique in its structure and design throughout the world and has been recognized as a World Heritage Site as part of the White City. The old north was populated primarily by affluent people who emigrated from central Europe. It adopted the term “northern”, meaning rich and spoiled, and later also referred to the residents of the New North and the residents of the neighborhoods of Hayarkon. Neighborhoods across the Hayarkon are the northernmost neighborhoods in the city, and relatively newer, even though some of them began to be built already in the 50s.
